Story Ground

Drama & Documentary, Audio & Theatre, History & Politics

G’day, I’m an independent audio producer, with a storytellers heart, a lawyer’s logic, a lyrical ear (or so my inner spin writer tells me).

I move across storytelling mediums perhaps a little too readily, and while I am a writer at heart, it is the warmth and expression of the human voice that most appeals - in audio and in live performance.

I have created several long form podcast series that follow a narrative through line, interwoven with history, reflection, commentary and advocacy for how we can build a better, more equal world. A tall order.

I also enjoy oral history interviews - sitting with people in spacious time to deeply hear their stories.

I am now exploring playwriting which seems a natural fit for my interest and experiences in oral storytelling, writing, community development, politics and reflection.

Why Story?

Story grounds us in our bodies, in our emotions; story weaves us whole and nothing casts the spell of enchantment like story.

Democracy After Disaster

Its been a long time in the making, but the podcast I have been working on over the last 4 years is finally out in the world.

Democracy After Disaster is a nine part narrative documentary series that explores how communities impacted by disaster need to be empowered in their recovery if they are not to be further harmed by the systems meant to help them.

The focus is not the heat of the moment, the drama of the disaster, although we do hear some of those stories. The focus is on the cold charcoal, the reweaving of the tatters of community, the glacial painstaking work that unfolds over months and years and moves a people and a system and a politics towards that shape-shifting concept we call recovery.

We talk to community leaders from Macedon to Mallacoota, to recovery workers, and to experts in philosophy and political science and history. And we explore some brilliant, effective, and deeply human ways we can improve our collective recovery.

I've lived in a high bushfire risk area for 20 years, I've worked as a community bushfire educator and a community recovery officer for local government, so there some of my stories in there as well, as I grapple with these complex issues.

With natural disasters increasing year on year and traumas compounding, we need new and better ways of doing democracy. I hope some of you find this interesting enough to have a listen, and if you do I’d love to hear your feedback…
